A proudly South African story of innovation, community and the drive to make roofing accessible to everyone.
In 2013, on one of David Prinsloo's many trips through the Eastern Cape, he often noticed and witnessed the construction of old traditional African rondawels. The roof support structures presented a significant challenge — many were weak and collapsed in on themselves.
It was during his work at the Walter Sisulu University, where he and his team were privileged to be part of upgrade and waterproofing projects, that David had the opportunity to speak at length with the local community.
After numerous lengthy discussions, the message was clear: communities had great difficulty designing and constructing rondawel roof support structures safely.
David and his team took the concerns of local communities back to their Cape Town office and got to work.
David Prinsloo observes the structural challenges faced by Eastern Cape communities when constructing rondawel roofs. During work at Walter Sisulu University, he engages deeply with local churches, chiefs and community members.
Back in Cape Town, David and his dedicated team work on a solution — creating the Eezi-Over Roof Kits. The goal: make roofing quicker, safer, stronger, cheaper and more structurally secure. An easier way to build a roof support structure.
The kit launches to immediate interest. Enquiries come in from the commercial and domestic market alike — including a 270 m² wedding venue in the Paarl area.
Eezi-Over sales personnel market the kits throughout Africa — mining houses, domestic lapas, gazebos, greenhouses, and low-cost housing. Two sample kits were even sent to the United States for further development.
David Prinsloo and his Eezi-Over team pride themselves on being able to contribute their skills, experience and services — making it possible in today's economic climate for everyone to have a roof over their heads.
The DIY kit design makes no use of a centre pole, allowing the occupants of the structure to utilise the entire floor space. Due to the structure's design and strength, rooftop living areas can also be constructed — keeping people safe off the ground, away from dangers or during flooding in rainy seasons.
